East African Safari - Mercury Comet T-shirt
In 1964, Tom Medley was commissioned by Mercury to created a logo illustration for Mercury Comet's ambitious attempt to tackle the grueling East African Safari Rally. At the time, the event was considered the ultimate test of automobile durability and performance.
Sadly, the American entry proved too heavy compared to the competition (a Peugeot 404 dominated) and had difficulty navigating the muddy terrain. But, Medley's cartoon -- to borrow a phrase from author Kurt Vonnegut -- is unstuck in time. It lives on! And it makes a very cool, unique t-shirt design.
