In the late 1980s, Tom Medley created a hot rod character by the name of Rodney Lowbucks for Hot Rod Mechanx, a magazine published by TMed's fishin' buddy, dear friend, and fellow hot rod legend Leroi "Tex" Smith.
Tex was a strong proponent of budget friendly rods built in one's own garage with parts salvaged from a wrecking yard. Hence, the "lowbucks" moniker. Tex (and Tom) believed equally that driving a hot rod was the ultimate expression of the hobby.
Which led to Medley's "Real Hot Rods are Driven! cartoon, presented here for the first time on a t-shirt.
